● 会议背景介绍:

The ModelCARE2009 conference provides an international forum on state-of-the-art methodologies and techniques for model calibration and reliability assessment. The conference will address the applicability of various approaches to real-world problems through advanced case studies and identify future needs and paths toward progress for research and development. The conference will bring together researchers, industry, regulators, consultants, planners and water supply agencies to discuss the utility of models to managing groundwater and related environmental systems.
The conference theme is “Managing Groundwater and the Environment.” Within the context of model calibration and reliability, issues of groundwater quantity and quality will be addressed. Exploring and protecting groundwater resources in developing countries is of special interest.

● 征文范围及要求:

Contributions on a wide range of topics are welcome. A 400 word abstract should be submitted on-line by January 1, 2009 (modelcare2009@gmail.com). The topics covered by the conference are intended to be broad in scope within the context of groundwater model calibration and reliability. Principal themes and topics include:

1 New advances and innovations in model calibration, model prediction, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty assessment:

Accounting for conceptual model uncertainty and use of multiple conceptual models
Accounting for uncertainty in future scenarios of pumping, recharge, and other stresses
Subsurface heterogeneity, scaling issues, and stochastic modeling
Comprehensive use of field information, including geophysical and remotely sensed data
Parallel computing for forward solutions, calibration, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty evaluation
Identification of important new data and experimental design to increase the reliability of model predictions
Model predictions, uncertainty and long-term monitoring: goals, design, and failures and successes
Use of Monte Carlo and other global methods in the evaluation of uncertainty
Use of inferential methods to evaluate uncertainty
2 Parameterizing groundwater models:
Use of geologic principles to design model parameters and otherwise constrain groundwater model construction
Constructive use of zonation, interpolation (including pilot points), and geostatistical methods. Parsimonious and highly parameterized methods are of interest, with and without prior information, regularization, and redefinition of parameters using singular value decomposition (SVD).

3 Construction, calibration, reliability and use of models designed to address resource and environmental concerns, including but not limited to:
Transport of heavy metals, endocrine disrupting compounds, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and other contaminants in groundwater and groundwater affected systems
Remediation and clean-up of contaminated soil and groundwater
Heterogeneity controls on contaminant fate and clean-up
Groundwater quality issues in aquifer storage and water re-use
Natural attenuation as a remediation and management strategy
  Reactive and variable-density transport
Saltwater intrusion due to over pumping
  Ground-water/surface-water interactions
  Groundwater flooding
Integrated hydrologic systems encompassing all components of the hydrologic cycle
Effects of land-use and climate change on groundwater flow and quality in large-scale watersheds
  Ground-water dependent ecosystems

4 Modeling of regional groundwater systems and karst water systems (The following two special sessions are sponsored by the China Geological Survey, and all are encouraged to submit papers on these topics):

Model construction, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty assessment of regional groundwater systems
Modeling of groundwater flow and solute transport in karst aquifers
